Post Trip Thoughts

It was a good 4 days break with great company of cousins! Ok ok, I admit I thought of work a little but was just minimal. The amount of lame comments and remarks were record breaking. But it is through these brainless moments that we really laughed it all out.

Of the 4 days, 3 days we had to wake up early. Really early. The first day, our flight was at 6am, 4am we had to check-in. The 2nd day was the only day we slept in later, 3rd dat at 4.30am so that we could catch sunrise and 4th day at 5am to catch our flight back.

Food was reasonable there, big servings. Alcohol was superbly cheap. 50 cents USD for a glass of beer, USD1.50 for glass of house pour.

This is the first time most of the cousins went on a trip together, it provided a chance for all of us to know each other better on the trip. Like I didn't know those who usually looked serious have funny bones in them. Like how some behaviours are traits and characters of their own parents, they probably also saw mine in me too. Some are intolerable, mostly we can laugh over with.

I'm truly grateful to all as well for taking care good care of me during the trip. And yes, I can see that we can go for more trips together again next time.

Thank God too for helping me through all the difficult terrains and keeping me safe during the trip.

A Family Trip

After all the talks and discussions, we are finally going on the cousins' trip. 9 of us in all... wow!! That was what some of the people said when I told them. Yes, "WOW". Since many years, we have not been on holidays and in such a big group. After this post, I'll be on my way to the airport. If all goes well, it may end up as a yearly affair for us to go holiday together.

My nice break is finally here. Thank you Lord!

VERY Pissed!

I did an unthinkable thing today. It was a mistake to click 'send' on the email before checking who is my recipient. I called a colleague a 'b***h'. Rather unlike of me to do so but I was just so overwhelmed by what that person did. I'm still adamant that she deserves it, maybe a few days later I may think otherwise. For now, yes, she truly deserves it.

We had a face to face meeting later in the afternoon and I could not bother looking at her. I've never felt so pissed in this job that I would just shoot off this remark out of my mouth. Not even the worst students.

This job is really trying, testing my patience to the limit. I need to see that I have the graces to continue. I can't see now.

Progressing

Last night, I managed to turn my body and legs without causing any hurt to my wounds. YES!! Today, after the bandages were removed, I could slowly start walking without my crutches. Mainly at office room and at home. YES!!!! Still, I won't be pushing myself too hard. Will do my best in recovery.

One thing I'm puzzled about. I felt the static level in body increased tremendously today back at my working desk. It was like anytime a electric shock. I had a static shock in the car today. Gave my knee a sudden jerk and sudden shock with pain. Scary.

Starting physio soon... erm, as soon as I can start driving...

The Feel

Since my op, I have been moving in and out of my house, going to places. And I must say that I have the privileges of being a "handicap" and also a fair share of being stared at for my temporary disability.

A day after my op, it was birthday cum farewell chalet for a few friends. Since weeks ago, emails have been sent out inviting me to attend. Then I already knew that I probably would not be able to but the host left the invitation open. The resort security made a thoughtful move to fetch me on a buggy to the unit so that I do not need to walk too much. It's not a long distance if I was able to walk normally. It was a privileged ride :D

Then yesterday, there were 2 sent offs for the same friends going away. I chose the 2nd one as they are a few hours apart and I was very sure my dad would not agree to let me out that early. It was not a long walk but it took like forever for me to cover that short distance. I was quite touched at the point when I had to go to the toilet, the cleaner aunty saw me inching to the handicap toilet, she immediately came forward to help me open the toilet door. That was a service which I never had experienced at the airport before. Now you probably can guess why we are the No. 1.

And then a friend and I moved on to a dinner meet-up. The restaurant was double storey and they were nice to allow me to go by the short cut at the side door. I was touched by their gesture. And it was also at the mall that I see the typical Singaporean how they behave towards people who are handicapped. As I was walking to the toilet, the corridor leading to it was quite in, I stucked to one side of the walkway giving way to people who also needs to go to restrooms. Ok, I stucked to wrong side. Cos when I was walking in slowly, some people are just insensitive enough to take extra steps to avoid me. They chose to head on with me. Fine. When I was walking towards the restaurant, the cleaner aunty plus her trolley head-on also at me. I actually stopped to see where she wants to go. Then only she stopped. It was a small space that was around me. It was spacious enough for her to avoid me. And then, this teenager who is just so engrossed in whatever he was holding in his hand, almost bumped into me.

The best part. When I entered into the restaurant via the side door, 1 table of diners stared at me. Like they have never seen a person walking on crutches, like why I could enter via that side door.

Well, in all I won't say Singaporeans are insensitive. I had nice neighbours who gave way to me. The nice and thoughtful aunty at the airport and those I've met at the medical centre. I guess I'm just fortunate to have met nicer thinking and considerate people. I can't say anything as a whole yet, will still need time to discover.

I did it!

Finally! It's over. Not the end but the beginning. Beginning of rehab and hopefully a new leg.

My surgery time changed twice. First it was set as 9am, then changed to 11am then the day before I was asked to adjuct it to 7.30am. I got to the hospital at about 6am. Admitted and did a whole lot of admin. Then as soon as I got up to the Day Surgery Centre, I had to change to my surgery robe and almost immediately I was wheeled to the OT.

Those of you who have encountered or have loved ones who have gone through surgery would probably know that different people would come and ask you the same set of questions over and over again. I was asked at least 4 times including my surgeon.

Since young, I have grown with the phobia of needles. I requested from the nurse that I would like to be poked with the IV drip after anaesthesia took place. Then the anaesthetist came and told me one whole story how long it would take me to be knocked out and the smell and stuffs. Just trying to convince me to do IV drip way as the effect of anaesthesia would be faster.

I got in to the OT and the next thing he was preparing to insert the IV needle. Like any doctors, he talked to me and diverted my attention onto some topics. And I felt a small ant bite sensation, he told me its done. I was quite impressed. Being one of the most terrifying moments, I felt a lot relieved. Yeah, strangely, it wasn't the surgery.

My surgeon came late. 15 mins. And I was trying to sturggle to keep myself awake. Not because the medicine was taking effect but because I had nightmares and couldn't sleep well the night before. Too much anxieties I guess. So you would have figured out that it wasn't too difficult to knock me out after the anaesthesia was injected into my hand. I only heard the anaesthetist say "It will take effect in 10secs" and then I started to feel drowsy naturally, and he said again "Try to keep your eyes open". I tried to open but soon I just succumbed to the effect of the drug.

I remember falling into deep sleep with some dreams. Then very soon, I was awoken and I was told it's done. Over. I could still reply the people there "It's done?". After a while they wheeled me back to the recovery ward.

Dad came to hospital with me and he went to Mass at the chapel downstairs. Went to meet a nun and came up with her. It was nice to see the Sister. I guess because of her presence, I felt very relieved and appreciating God's love. I chose Mt A anyway.

Then the anaesthesia was still in effect but since they woke me up, I was drifting in and out of sleep. I took my phone from dad and started to sms friends who have been praying for me.

I gave thanks to God when I was in the recovery ward that I had survived through the operation. Though it may have been a small surgery but because GA was given, anything could have happened. I was thankful He saw me through it all even till now.

God is good, all the time. A friend was saying that since now that I am MC, it's probably His plan to put me back into perspectives of my relationship with Him. And certainly, God always puts such events in my life, in His time.

It was all worth it

This weekend is the annual Inter-Polytechnic and ITE Games for Archery. Before this weekend, I honestly didn't think that we retain the Championship Trophies as there has been some lagging in training for a while.

After the end of yesterday's shoot, we only knew about the first 2 events, 4 other events results were unknown. The host would send the results by night so that we can inform our competitors. And I waited... waited... after coming home from another school event and feeling a little feverish plus exhaustion. I fell asleep after pre-empting my President that we may not have the results till this morning.

I didn't had a good sleep. I dreamt that the results were in and I had to check it. My laptop was left on. Then at about 2.30am, I just woke myself from that and decided to check my mail box. When I saw the results, I was very surprised to see my poly ranking and the no. of gold medals we were leading by. Waking up and sending the results out was definitely worth it.

I was in such ecstasy spirit that I couldn't go back to sleep even though I forced myself to, tossing and turning on the bed.

Today, we reign again by showing the rest we truly deserve the title. Well done team. I am so proud of you!

Re-Start

I finally hit the pool again after more than one month of busy-ness. Felt so nuah and engine definitely having problem while starting up. Every stroke was not as easy as it used to be. Co-ordination between hands and legs was so clumsy. Muscles felt so stiff. I ended the session with a brewing headache.

Maybe I was too anxious and ambitious in getting back to regime. At one point of time, I was just pulling and kicking water for the sake of moving on and completing the lap. Of course, there were also a few good laps where everything just worked out well. I thought 20 laps was possible but only managed to do 16, and it was a struggle.

Somewhat my experience today seems akin to my life now. Every pull and kick is just to keep my body moving forward. And it is when I suddenly realise that I am losing focus and concentration, I began to try and re-start with proper strokes. A little of fumbling but after a short while, I can put things under control and all goes on again like normal.

I'm hoping to swim again in 2 days time and do better then. My life too.

Thoughts...

This week is just staying home, catching up on some errands and the last few days of it to Malacca for a short break. Had actually planned to be climbing in Taiwan now but with my knee condition and added heel tendons issues, it's a no go.

It feels great to be at home after so many days which I'm away from in September. I dreaded that month, wasn't looking forward to it and now, it is over. After this break, there is another month to dread - November.

The coming of November spells different challenges for me. 1. Surgery 2. Work (part 2).

I'm so not wanting to start school so soon cos when it does, I have 2 weeks to clear all the unenrolled students and then, THE day will come. Maybe because I have heard too many stories of how knee surgeries fail. As much as I am not keen, I don't think I have a choice. In normal times my knee easily swells already. I am apprehensive of the outcome.

And work is not helping with most of my competitions scheduled to take place in November. I will have to hobble around from place to place. And to add, I got to host one of them. I trust that God will grant me the graces when the time comes. He sure knows how big is my plate and how much to put on it.

One step at a time, I need to face the biggest fear first. Praying hard that the rest will fall into place when the time comes.

'Sorry' - seems to be the hardest word

Not a song but a reality that have learnt before and seen for myself today. I have come to appreciate the fact that saying 'sorry' is a valuable lesson that not many people can master well. Apologising to some people could even feel like taking a piece of flesh out from them.

Today, I saw for myself how a very prideful and ego student got bruised by the need to do this. He is often the one who knows when to behave, when to play kind. By a mistake, a critical one, that he made, unveiled a different side of him. Well, he did eventually offered apologies at the end, not discounting that fact.

I'm sure most of us (those who are adults) surely have our teenage struggles. Creating an identity for ourselves was probably one that most to cope with. To want to be whom we are not, and so many other situations. All these that may seemed small but has somewhat molded us to become what we are today, by our beliefs and attitudes. For this student, being able to humble himself to say sorry was THE challenge. I wish all the best and look forward to a better him.

Battery Almost Flat

I'm leaving on a school trip in less than 24hrs time, not motivated to pack, not keen to go in the first place. But I don't have a choice. I am the Staff Advisor, I have the duty of care over them. Well I guess if I'm going with friends the feeling will be different now.

I'm motivating myself to look forward to campfire. After that night, the next day we'll be returning. Yay!Honestly, I rather tolerate a tougher training at Kallang than to go tomorrow.

Eventful

September started with an outreach camp, then was cutter sailing course, then next week I'm following on a overseas school trip, then a 5 day ropes safety course. And when I thought all will end, there is a sea expedition by another club. This is my September. Workathon. Hardly any good rest, really.

And a colleague will only know how to say I should schedule meetings to work on the upcoming projects when she herself takes 2.5 weeks of leave. Are you expecting me to work by your schedule? Hello?!!?!?! Is it wrong for me to take leave after you return? And my fault for having so much activities in this break? Why don't you just take an initiative to takeover one of my these mentioned event from me? Else, I think you should just shut your gap.

Now I'm trying to nail down a destination for a good break. I really need one to get away from all these. 9 days is certainly not enough but better than nothing.

Blank

I thought I had a lot to say. But when I entered into my blog, my mind went blank. Maybe I'm just so overwhelmed. So many things, too many emotions. One thing for sure I know is that I know I'm draining out. And so badly.

I really need a break badly. I just feel like stopping and stop. Let go. But I can't. Break. A good break is really what I need.

Old Friends

I saw this at a food court recently - It takes a long time to grow old friends.

Literally so. And I'm appreciative that I have a group of "old friends" whom I grew up with. They are like vintage red wine, the longer it is kept, the greater the value. We used go to camps, BBQs, outings, movies, getting spiritual and many more things we do together. We used to tell off each other's strengths and weaknesses, to crying moments. These "old friends" are priceless to me, greater value than being vintage wine.

Have you ever heard people proclaiming as "You are my friend". I have heard too much of this statement in the recent months until now I think it has been abused. Friends who would make decisions with bearing of irresponsibilities to one, who may think that all said is like fairytale.

What makes you a friend? Actually it is very simple. I read a quote today, "The best vitamin for being a friend - B1". Think about it, what will you do to be one?

For me, thank you my "old friends". I may not be able to be there all the time for you but I'm certainly grateful for what you as friend is to me.

A decision I made

I have been telling friends who asked about my knee condition that I will be going for an op in a few months time. To tell the truth, I am scared. Not so much about the pain but if the op would really make a difference to my condition. I know I need to trust what the doc and physio say. Since I layed off a no. of sports I have seen the side effects and I also lost my fitness. This is so pek chek. I need divine peace.

A Humble Learning

Saturday games by my hockey boys was a good lesson to learn. It is the last game we play before breaking for exams. I could sit on the bench, for the first time, because it was a game which we did not have any players for substitution. Not because we are a strong and confident team but that 6 of my key players was not there for various reasons. 2 were supposed to turn up but our wait was realy in vain.

In less than 5 mins of the opening, we let in a goal. By half time, the score was 2-0 against us. In the 2nd half, we changed strategy and slotted in a goal. Keeping our fingers crossed we had hope to equalised but a silly mistake at shot corner cost us another goal.

We had our chances but our forwards were just to raw and new. The finishings were bad. I sat on the bench watching, shouting in at times and praying hard for 2 more players to turn up. Then I started feel a pinch psychologically. We had been winning every match all these times, even against the intimidating teams. I felt the lost as hard as my players who fought it out on the field. I had them wanting to win so much. So so much. Because I know they have yet to really meet the stronger teams which we may not do well.

Though the team wants to win, I felt that I wanted that win even harder. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I have always been that competitive and the past successes have gotten too much into me. When the game ended, I took a few minutes to recollect my emotions. And at this point, it is my lesson to learn. There are games that I go to and expect a win, there are also those I expect to lose. It is always those that I want my teams to win and that when they lose, I find it hard to accept.

Saturday was a humble learning, to be able to cope with a loss and disappointment. Just like in life, there will be times when it's smooth sailing and also times when things bring you down. And what's important is when you fall how you pick yourself up and move on.

Tea Bag

I'm like a tea bag soaked in a pot of hot water. The only thing I wonder is how thick will the tea be? That's an analogy used on a person in various situations. For me, the analogy adds further that the tea bag is being stuffed with more tea leaves now. How much more can the bag take? But then still, does it mean the more tea leaves it is stuffed the stronger the brew will be?

A Blessing Taken For Granted

I was at my grandaunt's wake this evening. I usually don't attend those uncontacted extended family member's events like this. Usually attending wakes are for the living people, to be with them and console. Not this time. I don't know 90% of the people though most of us share the same surname. Honestly, if I were to ever bump into them on the streets I really wouldn't even know it's them. I attended for the dead. For when I was young, she treated me nice and well. For the last time I am paying my respect to this elder.

It was a small room at Singapore Casket. She has many children, grandchildren and great-grand children. I sat there observing and felt very blessed. I have many cousins, uncles and aunties on both paternal and maternal side. Sometime ago I shared about a cousins gathering and it's moments like this that reminds me I have a close knitted extended family. Seriously, what I saw was like as though they only meet once or twice a year kind.

I am truly grateful to be able to experience good family love.

Leadership

It wasn't meant to be a discussion about this topic at all. I walked in to the office only to want to discuss about work. And then for just 5 mins of mention, this topic really bit me off till now.

I am certainly not a perfect person and surely not a perfect leader as well. That 5 mins on this topic made me felt that I was being judged. Maybe my body language and bluntness gives others some the perspectives they see. Still, I don't believe that I need to garner respect from a psychotic and one who always thinks he/she is right. I need to go extra extra miles to do that. Is that necessary? How many leaders would really do that anyway? I am only human, one with imperfections. If only then I am a successful leader, then I don't think any leaders in this world fits this bill at all. Alright, I am not giving myself excuses and there is no wrong or right here. But that only sounds like an ideal situations.

And then it brought a thought to me that I will be so fake and to be able to work with these people and pretending to be nice. Is this leadership then? Yes, but not the style I want to use. I don't think I have ever put on any aires on my support staffs. In the first place, I didn't even choose to create enemity with them. I truly respect them for the hardwork and effort they put in, even when they don't, have I ever made their lives difficult?

I agree that a good leader must learn to be humble and carry out servantship at times but certainly not to the situation where I must bow to listen to them and do what they want. I am not one who likes to pull rank. I can but I also know the detriment of doing so. Please open your eyes and ears to see and hear the real thing.

Car Wash

How many of you had tried washing cars before? Well, I didn't really washed well before till I had my own car. And to wash off a car filled with droppings without the jet spray is the worse thing.

I had to run errand this morning but to my horror was that the droppings were splattered across my windscreen. No, I was not prepared to use my wiper to clean them all away. Neither was I willing to drive around to complete my errands in that "design". I recall that the petrol kiosk outside my estate has car wash and decided to pop in there before getting anywhere else.

As I drove near the washing bay, I saw a sign that mentions about 'Money Back Guarantee' if the wash is not clean because the cars are washed by people from MINDS. I hesistated for a few seconds and thought maybe I'll just give it a try. I have to give them the benefit of doubt.

While I was driving in, thoughts begin to run if the wash is going to be worth it, would the people know to use the right piece of sponge and if my car would be scratched. Yes, you can say that I was stereotyping on these people on their ability to clean my car well.

I drove into the washing bay with the cleaners staring in at me, as though they could feel my doubt. I felt bad somewhat at that point of time thinking that I should not see them through my own "filter mind".

At the final rinse with the spray jet, I must admit that I have never been to any car wash that really makes it a point to clean the car well after being soaped. It was at least 1.5 times longer than the usual rinsing time. I knew then for sure that my car has been well washed.

I drove to the drying bay and could not resist in coming out to see the cleanliness state. Really, I felt so guilty about doubting their abilities at the beginning. I gave a big smile and thank each of those who wiped my car dry.

It may not have been a perfect dry state that most car washes would give but I am more than happy at the attitude they have all displayed. I believe that many in the society shares the perspective as I had when we think about what the intellectual handicapped people could do. Our judgemental thoughts certainly didn't give these a people a chance to prove themselves of their worths. They may not be able to do a 100% of what we expect. Nevertheless, they aim to reach it and it isn't far off from what we want actually.

This encounter of social entrepreneurship has made me thought differently about them. And yes, I will go back there for future washes.

*In case you can't read off the picture, the message on the glass says, "Your bubbly and sparkling car wash goes a long way."

In-Conversation

My little nephew is sooooo cute. Though only 3 years old and short of two front teeth, he is beginning to speak more and cheekily. Below are some examples of conversation that I had with him recently.

Nephew: You are sitting on my chair!

Me: (Lying across a big sofa couch) No, I'm not sitting. I'm lying on the chair!

Nephew: (not understanding my statement) NO, you are sitting on my chair!

Me: No, I'm lying on the chair.

Nephew (Still cannot accept what I said and getting impatient) No, you are sitting on my chair!

Me: No, I'm lying on the chair. See, there's space on the chair, you can still sit here. Your backside is not that big (pointing to the remaining space enough for his little butt to sit).

Nephew: hahahahaha... no.... (and he walks away)

Nephew: I'm going downstairs.

Me: Are you going to my house?

Nephew: No, I'm going to downstairs, Ye Ye's house.

Me: Oh, that's my house.

Nephew: No, it's Ye Ye's house

Me: yes, I stay there.

Nephew: No

Me: Do you know who am I?

Niece: Gu Gu

Nephew: (standing there unknowingly what to say)

Me: Do you know who is my Gor Gor?

Niece: I know! It's Daddy!

Nephew: No, he's my Daddy!

Me: He's my Gor Gor

Nephew: No, my Daddy!

Me: You bully me I will tell my Gor Gor.

Nephew: No, he is my Daddy!

The Wall In Front

I can almost hit it now... anytime soon. So much has happened at office and work is loading. Thanks to all the talks about being friends. And what friendship at work has caused? More work.

I'm sure I don't lack any graces from Him but I just feel that something is missing. Heard the song below in mandarin mass on Sunday. It's an awesome song. Holy Spirit is like a supplement that helps to boost our immunity against whatever viral attack that we may face on our spiritual self. Need Holy Spirit to move me on.

Come Holy Spirit (City Harvest Church)

Come holy spirit fall on me now
I need your anointing
Come in your power
I love you holy spirit
You're captivating my soul
And every day i grow to love you more
I'm reaching for your heart
You hold my life in your hand
Drawing me closer to you
I feel your power renew
Nothing compares to this place
Where i can see you face to face

A Great Time

Weekend came and it's almost over. In 2 days, I met up with different groups of people and caught up quite a bit.

First, Saturday early morning appointment was made with 2 adventurous persons to go hunt for durians. Well, erm, I overslept...hahaha... got my fair share of being suaned when I eventually got to the meeting place, not too late though. We couldn't find any, rather, we didn't know where to really find them but we saw people walked past us with bags full. Then we decided to explore a bit and ahah! Hee... next time we know. It was good fun and some camaderie which usually would not have over dinners.

Then was work... nothing exciting.

In the evening, met up with cousins with the intention of welcoming our third youngest one back from his overseas studies. We sat and listened to the interesting stories of what Americans youth do and some of the funny things that he did. As usual, such gatherings isn't short of teases and jokes on each other. Exchanging infos about our parents just like how they would sit down last time and even now to share about us among them. Haha...

A reminensence of what we cousins did when we were still kids at my grandma's old house. Time flew so fast that what seemed like yesterday were things that happened more than 20 years ago. When we could not see eye to eye during our individual youth growth to today where some of us are married and laughing over those juvenilility of ours.

We may not meet often but surely enough for us to realise and appreciate each others' presence in our growing up years.

This morning, I managed to wake up early for mass and then hopped on to climb with a few friends/colleagues before some work responsibilities again. It's been almost 5 months since I last climbed. Didn't do much routes but was a good start somewhere. Knee was surprisingly manageable, probably because I taped it.

It may not have to be an expensive gathering, simple meets like these helps to relieve the stress from work quite a bit. If only weekend is longer. Am certainly looking forward to more of such work-life-balance activities.

With thanksgiving

I'm one year older, hopefully wiser too. Haha... I had my first birthday meal yesterday, riding on the return of our Everester friend, so honoured! Well, there will be one more tonight with me family and probably another with my friends of many many years who are arranging it.

Birthdays, besides cakes, presents and meals also mean the day which my mama suffered the greatest physical pain in her body so that I can come to this world. It marks an end to 10months of cravings, water retention hands and feet and probably some pukings. It is a new beginning of learning and journey of the child.

My dad never liked us to celebrate his birthday because he feels that the greatest person who let birth happened successfully is the mother. We should be celebrating for the mummy instead. The biggest thank you I can ever give to my mama for the 10 enduring months and that bursting moment is to be a good daughter, one that she feels proud of. Why bursting moment? A friend wished me "Happy Bursting Day!" ... haha...

Each of us grow up differently even between siblings. We may have tried to do similar things because that person is your brother or sister but still it is an unique journey. I am thankful for these years of my life for all that has happened. All the ups and downs, my successes and plans that have failed.

The Almighty One, the bestest friend anyone could have, who is always there for me and taking care of things in my life. All the near deaths encounters, who could have been the one who pulled me out of it all? Whenever I think back, it's just unbelievable how I survived from those moments and unscathed at times. The times that He teaches what is trust and each time more affirmation of my faith. My dear Lord, thank you for being there, 24/7 unrelentlessly.

My family and friends who were there for me. Honestly, I would not have been where I am or be who I am today if not for them. All the love, care, concern and advises (sounds cliche? haha...) I appreciate it. My family, the silent supporters and people who helps me to appreciate the extended family relationships. That extraordinary bonding that we have.

All you who are reading into this, if you are my friend, thank you for being part of my life and it would not have been as colourful if not for your presence. My colleague says my life is boring because he sees it surrounded by work. How can it ever be with you all around? You are the silver lining behind those dark clouds!

Cheers!

What?

It's my month! Hee... yay, and I get to enjoy 30 days of it every year, not like I can get to call all the shots though. I wished!

From the last entry to now I went through a roller coaster ride of emotions. A good friend summited the world's tallest mountain, an ex-worker passed away in another freak accident and work is ...

I received an email yesterday from another department's management putting me in very positive light for my efforts in her project. For a while, I felt appreciated and motivated to move on. Realistically, it really isn't so. When life snaps back at me for the so much I have to do, and I only have 2 hands, the bubble just burst. On the way to airport yesterday, I was exchanging info with a friend on our respective benefits and remuneration. He asked a question which I could not answer. "How much passion do I have in job now"? I would love to give a big smile and reply confidently but I couldn't. Maybe one year ago I will say I am enjoying my work. I need greater motivation now to be passionate for what I am doing.

What's cheering me up more is really my friend who completed her dream and is back safely. God has shown His greatness through all the blessings. Truly, I am very grateful.

Recovering

I must log in this entry though I'm feeling groggy from the medication, for a friend who read my previous post and made my day by asking me to read hers. What a sacrifice! Thanks! You know who you are, at that part of the world... Appreciate your concerns and effort to make me laugh... at your own expense... haha... My friend of 19 or 20 years (I can't remember... shikes!) not counting those years when we were all angels at Christmas Pageant! :P

Sick

It's been a long time since I had such high fever. Was burning at 38.1 degrees high this morning, really nuah until cannot nuah. I practically slept through the whole except times when I had to drag myself out of bed to toilet or have my meal and medication. And in another few hours time it's bedtime. Yes, I will have no problem going to bed.

Only if there is no work this weekend ... I hope my fever will subside by tomorrow and feel better. I can't teach on Thursday if I'm still feeling nuah. sigh...

Am I?

I was discussing with my physio during the treatment this morning as to the possibility why the left muscles of my whole body is generally tighter or problematic than the right. Usually if a person is right handed, naturally the right hand / leg is the master hand / leg. Therefore the tendency for the right side muscles tends to be used more often which would tighten up easier.

I could have been born as a left-hander. And so, it suddenly dawned upon me that I could do quite a no. of things with my left hand, not very well but manageable with conscious efforts. I can write, dribble a basketball, use chopsticks, pour water ... yeah, so what can be too difficult doing this? Curiosity got me and I googled about left-handedness.

Left-handed persons are thought to process information using a "visual simultaneous" method in which several threads can be processed simultaneously. Another way to view this is such: Suppose there were one thousand pieces of popcorn and one of them was colored blue. Right-handed people—using the linear sequential processing style—would look at the popcorn one at a time until they encountered the blue one. The left-handed person would spread out the pieces of popcorn and look at all of them to find the one that was blue. (It sounds quite like what I would do). A side effect of these differing styles of processing is that right-handers need to complete one task before they can start the next. Left-handers, by contrast, are capable and comfortable switching between tasks. This seems to suggest that left-handed people have an excellent ability to multi-task, and anecdotal evidence that they are more creative may stem from this ability to multi-task.

Wikipedia, Left-Handedness, Correlations with left-handedness, Left-handedness and intelligence

Well, this is only one of the explanations I may not be afterall... hmm... did my parents stuff the pen in my right hand and made me just start with using it?

Need To Change Batteries

I'm mentally exhausted, drained. I desperately need to re-charge myself but work is not ending anytime soon. In fact, this is the beginning. I have only 2 hands. So much to complete in such a short time.

What can be worse when you already have so much to do and people just come telling you they are going here and there for holidays and whining about the work is given to them. I'm at the verge of spilling uncouth languages. I guess it's probably His graces that I'm constrained from doing it.

Better not push the buttons ...

Absolute or not?

Is there absolute right or wrong always? What factors determines what is right and wrong? Grey area. Rhetorically, you can argue your way to either. What if we add in a human interest factor?

I have frequently used this when I was doing my bachelor programme. The lecturers would often tell us there is no particular right or wrong views if you can justify your thoughts. Question. Would your values then change to support your justification? Values that could have be instilled in you since young with cultural influences.

Today, I hear for myself what youths these days think of what supposed good values have evolved to. I am appalled or should I be not? I don't know. I really don't know.

Is doing what values views as wrong considered conservative? Have the western tv shows influenced our youths otherwise?

Dreaming

Have you ever tried to plug your mp3 with songs of praise and worship while you are immersed in the Himalayas? I have and I missed doing it.

I was driving home last night and was listening to Faith 2. The music was so good that my thoughts brought me back to the mountains as though I was resting in the tea house at Lukhla watching the hills and planes flying into the runway. It's an indescribable feeling. I think I terribly need a break but school just started... shikes!

Thinking

Short term pain for long term gain? This short term is also not exactly that short, I also have other factors to consider.

I had a little shock by the term that my 2 phyios used to me today. They said it was ulcer or cysts. Sounds much worse than what the ortho said. Doc just told me that the cartilage is injured.

Thursday, April 16, 2009

In the end...

It wasn't a muscular problem, a cartilage instead. My cartilage got injured, like scratched and injured. And that is the part that is causing the pain. 4 weeks to next review and I'm on medication to see if it can help in improving the condition or else, surgery.

Scanned

The films are with me but I'm somewhat not keen to see it before tomorrow. I'm somewhat fearful to know the truth tomorrow as well.

I received this sms bible passage today. "To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see." Heb 11:1

I need to remian in faith with Him to face the truth. I know I need to let go and let Him take over now but I'm struggling to let go.

Still Waiting

Diagnosis is partially done and he mentioned what my physios said... "It's an unusual injury. Do a MRI and we'll talk further from there."

Tomorrow is the scan, seeing him again on Wednesday.

Passion

Have you ever watched the movie Ladder 49? If you haven't, go rent it. It says everything about being passionate for things you like to do. It is a movie that talks about fireman's job. Fireman isn't just putting out fires. There are also search and rescue and other roles.

Passion can be a job, hobby, topic, sports or even food!

There are some things in my life that I'm passionate about. I enjoy the outdoors, I don't mind being dirty when I'm camping. I can tolerate with minimal hygiene in those conditions but not when you put me back in proper urban settings. Maybe it's just natural for people to react this way? I enjoy photography and videography. The process of editing is tiring and exhaustive but the end result gives me a good sense of satisfaction. Of recent years, I learn to appreciate red wine especially with friends who shares the same interest. And these are just a few to mention.

In the process of being passionate over these things, I have sacrifice time and money, at times putting my life at risk as well but I am happy doing them.

Many years ago, I chose to quit Outdoor Education work because I was so afraid that by doing it so much it would kill my passion. Somehow I landed myself still doing parts of it now. I can't say for sure that I am doing it purely because I am passionate. Partially would better describe it. In any case, I see a different perspective of Outdoor Education now and a different belief for it too.

I have seen a lot of people who claimed to love the outdoors and decides to come into this field of work. Is that really true? Or is it because people think that this field offers them a pot of gold, literally?

Jack (character in Ladder 49) decides to move on from his work as a fireman putting out fires to do search and rescue. He knew the risks involved in the job. He saw how his good friend died on a mission. He still chose to do it. His extra remuneration wasn't that a great deal afterall.

When you can't get as much of the monetary returns to satisfy your wants, would you still remain passionate about what you think it's your passion?

Jack didn't let this bother him. What about you?

Distracted by pain

In a dilemma. I'm dreading what Monday will tell me but yet at the same time also waiting for an answer to my pain. I want so much to get my knee cured/healed but at the same time knowing that some sacrifices or inconveniences to me and others will happen. There's no perfect solution.

There are just instances when I tell myself that perhaps it's just the usual pain and it'll get by. And then when I try to "test" my condition, I can feel that I am in a bad shape. Maybe really physio will just do? I can't wait for the MRI Scan to be done. I need an answer to what is going on.

And I am reminded often again that I should leave this in His hands, even if I know I can be in control.

Leader

It's a sign, isn't it? That I'm blogging further days apart from each other. Busy. Really.

My life has been overwhelmed with so much emotions over these 2 weeks. Farewells, weddings, back stabbings... and in these different situations, I'm a leader or a participant. Leadership role was given and also assumed when the time arises.

I saw it so clearly when others are leaders and how I follow or am being treated as their followers. I enjoyed my journey with some but also dreaded a few. These instances teaches me a lot. I mean it. Especially when I'm always seen as a leader in front of my students. How I behave, talk and think influences them in return.

I was in a situation the other day and I'm not inspired by that style of leadership. It was not tyrannical, it was worse. People who do not get to exercise their authority and when they do, it looked so ugly. I told myself that I really would not want to be that kind of leader. No matter what.

I need His divine wisdom to guide me as a good leader. To inspire than to dreaded upon.

Unlearn to Re-Learn

Wah, it's been such a long time since I have updated my blog. Nothing much has happened. Been pia-ing to meet different datelines.

The last 3 days were one of the most meaningful times I spent at work since I started. It is also an awakening call of my workload in the next 2 years.

I had been most privileged to been able to work with 2 great teachers, 1 which I have always been working with, another an inspiring mountaineer. I learnt a new saying - Learn and Relearn.

My past belief would have made me do the first part. Now I see a different perspective from the second part. My first lesson that teaches me to achieve this is being able to manage our achievements. Only with humility then can we accept new teachings/perspectives, getting us to unlearn to re-learn.

Tested

I received this message today.

"Make it your aim to do what is right, not what is evil, so that you may live. Then the Lord almighty really will be with you, as you claim he is."
Amos 5:14

I was again tested by faith before the day ended at office.

Red Dragonfly

We sang this at Pat and Jos's wedding last night, quite an impromptu one, decided last minute when the singing got the crowd very involved. Thanks to Nessie for googling the lyrics on the spot, that helped a lot especially for those of us who have not sang it for many many years.

We used to sing this at camps or almost any other group events of LOM. Today, the lyrics had a different meaning. We have indeed grown up (and wide :P ). Are our dreams really taking flight with us?

The song also brought back a lot of memories, then and now, at least for me. What we used to do and believe. And I am thankful no matter what. The "prime" of my youth was spent serving the Lord in this society. At different periods with this group of friends which created a bondage among us despite time, distance, environment etc. I am privileged to have been on that journey.

Thank you Lord!

I was in awed of a message I received this morning. He knows, He really knows when I need it.

"In everthing we do, we show that we are God's servants by patiently enduring troubles, hardships and difficulties. 2 Cor 6:4. (God's glory will shine and His name will be praised through the different way we handle crisis and problems as we fully use the gift of patience from the Holy Spirit)."

It was an encouraging start. I have been taught before that to give thanks always. In good times and especially in bad.

Thank You Lord - Don Moen

Thank You Lord

I come before you today
And there's just one thing that I want to say
Thank you lord
Thank you lord
For all you've given to me
For all the blessings that I cannot see
Thank you lord
Thank you lord

**With a grateful heart
With a song of praise
With an outstretch arm
I will bless your name
Thank you lord
I just wanna thank you lord
Thank you lord
I just wanna thank you lord
Thank you lord

For all you've done in my life
You took my darkness and gave me your light
Thank you lord
Thank you lord
You took my sin and my shame
You took my sickness and healed all my pain
Thank you lord
Thank you lord

You Are Here

I trust that for everything that I do, it was part of a plan that God had planned for. A good example was this morning when I had planned to wake up at 9.30am and go for the 10.45am mass. Instead, I woke up later, 10.30am. The feeling was not good as waking 1 hr earlier could have meant I could have that extra 1 hr to do what I wanted to do today. (just in case you're wondering why I woke up late, I slept at almost 3.30am) I woke up knowing that I need to check what is the next mass time that I can make it for. And there was another at 11.30am.

It was a guest celebrant for that mass, only know him as Fr Joe from Franciscan Missionary. I was quite distracted during mass. And somewhere during homily, I managed to catch Fr Joe mentioned that in this time of recession, many people are turning to religion for divine intervention in any ways. What he said just struck a chord with how my life has been lately. I'm not that affected by the recession, I'm thankful for that, it's something else.

I'm grateful that I "subscribe" to this daily bible verse sent through sms. Of late it just seemed like God sent me many encouragements to hang'in there. I'm glad that during my low times, I kept Him in my life. Or maybe I should say that I only remember Him in times of need.

The hymns that we sang today reminded me constantly that I am His. That I am always in His care, He is my refuge, He will see through all that is to come. I felt so loved. A feeling which felt so familiar but lost I it when I tried so hard in controlling my life. The days where no matter how tough times were I would hold on to him and let Him lead. These days, I only tell Him to lead and really expect my cross to be lifted instantly. And when I can't feel it, I get frustrated. The fact is, He has always been there. I just did not see Him and put my trust forth.

Another thing that Fr Joe said, what do we do to show others that we are Christians? That we just put words of praises on our lips? That I abstain on meat to show that I am a good follower? Instantly my brain refers this statement to a colleague who shares the same religion as me and what the person is doing towards me now. I have been so focused on all the negative vibes and it really upsetted me. Fr Joe reminded me of a sentence which I won't remember in such trying times - No matter what, keep your smile. It makes your enemies wonders what you are up to. I must admit that it was tough being a Christian in office these days. In my heart, I was hoping so hard that person would get the same message today. I realised while I focused so much on what is done against me, I fell into the trap that would make the evil one happy. How my secret hoping that some justice could be done treated an eye for an eye. What a Christian have I been too?

It's a new week, a fresh start. Help me Lord, to live my life this week with what you have always wanted us to do. "Go forth to love and serve the Lord." Keep me with you. For every trial, Your graces are there enough for me. Teach me to entrust my life in your hands, once again.

You Are Here

You are here in our midst.
How we've waited for moments like this.
Have Your way in this place.
Holy Spirit come do as you wish.
We are changed as You move in our midst.
You are here among us for we have gathered in Your Name.
We can feel Your presence in this place.
You are here among us.
You are enthroned upon Your praise.
You are here, here to heal and here to save.

Getting Out of Comfort Zone

I zipped down my school's flying fox today. Not for fun but trying it out for myself and testing the management system and conducting style for it. I wasn't sure if I could follow the recommended format. As I'm writing now, I'm still thinking.

In most conventional flying fox / zipline / omega, whatever you term it, there would usually be 2 handloops where you can put your hands in and hold on to it. It somewhat would give a person a sense of security. The one I tried today has nothing to hold on to. I can only hold on to my primary safety line if I need some "assurance"

It took me a little bit of psyching-up to lean forward and go with the flow. If you see the drop, it looks really scary. I guess it's really about trusting the system, the despatcher, the equipment and all the other factors. Eventually I did. I had a good time whee-ing down the tower :D

When I was going back to the office, I kept thinking how this system could work - without handloops. I challenged myself to think what this activity will give to the participants but of course not compromising safety.

I must admit that without the handloops, it took me a much longer time to get down. It seemed like I was missing something, lesser sense of security. I just needed more assurance for myself. Translating it to life, isn't this what we also always want to have as well? Don't we often tell ourselves that we must have 'A' so then only can we get 'B' done? Do we see the handloop really as an assurance or can we do without it? The fact is we are safe and secure already by the system and the equipment. Why do we need something else to deceive ourselves psychologically that this is safe?

Haha, good thinking... I guess I have sorted it out, the handloops.

Abundance Blessings!

It seemed like we had just celebrated Christmas and New Year not long ago and now we're celebrating the Lunar New Year!

I had 2 reunion dinners yesterday and today. It was as usual at last night's dinner with over flowing of food. We could easily feed everybody there again in another meal, half-filled probably. Yes, it was so much leftover. My cousin asked why can't there be good estimation of amount to bring / prepare than to have so much leftovers? At tonight's dinner, my dad mentioned in the midst of chats that not every family is so fortunate to have so much to eat during this economy downturn.

I do think that my family (inclusive of extended family) are blessed greatly. The abundance of food on the table. I pray that God would continue to bless and keep my family always. THANK YOU LORD!

Assumptions

I can't recall why or what but I've never liked assumptions. They suck, because it is a one sided judgement passed from one person to another. When people tell me so and so is this or did this did that, I would ask them how did they know? I needed more evidence to convince myself because I did not witness or encounter it myself.

I was quite pissed today and all because I decided to respect another person's opinions. But what I have in exchanged is a lot of assumed questioning. What have I done to deserve this? I could have just gone ahead with my own stand.

I can't stand it when people assume. I ask is because I want to seek to clarify, thinking through maybe there was other reasons to the cause. Being misunderstood is a terrible thing. And it is worse when the assumption is from a third party.

Lost In Many Translations

This is the first post of the year for me. Had wanted to write my resolutions on 1st Jan but didn't do it cos I was rushing some work to complete.

Speaking of work, it has been non-stop for me. I hadn't stopped working for 2 weeks. Yep, there hasn't been a real break for me. Anyway, I don't want to dwell much into it. If being responsible for my work is an eye sore or I'm 'spoiling market', I have nothing to say.

CNY is coming. Had wanted to get away and give myself a break but then again no kaki, no $$.

This is going to be a busy year, a very challenging one. I know for sure that God would not put me through each of these without His graces. I need to believe in Him. If you believe in Him, remind me that the Lord will be there to keep me always. I'm human, I need to hear these words too.
