Today, I had one of a few rare chance to interact with a student leader of mine. I remember the day when she accepted her responsibility, she was quiet, unsure of the future and probably feeling jittery (my guess). During the 1st 6 months of her term, I never really had a chance to meet and talk to her. Usually over emails, smses and phonecalls, for official business.
It was of late that I realised that this young lady is no longer the quiet and passive leader I used to know. Probably because of her short stint of industrial work attachment or maybe it was the role and responsibility that moulded a change. Whatever it is, I am happy to see that change for a better.
Never mind how tough or rocky the path is ahead for me and the club. Most people would have thrown into a fit of anger against accusations. What overwhelmed me more was how she (ok, and her VP too) spoke up for me against the rest that heartens me more than feeling angry, really. For that moment, I really felt like I have helped to make a change in a youth's life. How a youth is transformed and ready for young adulthood.
The conversation we had may not be remembered for long. It doesn't matter. For it is moments like this that I know my work and efforts have not gone to waste. I look forward to the days where leaders that might just be like caterpillars, turning into butterflies one day.
